Get to know XFC’s Chris Wright

For those out there that aren’t familiar with Chris Wright, let’s start by telling us about yourself. What is your background? What is your training like?

Truth be told, my background is street fighting. Like Plies, “I’m from the hood doe, like the hood doe, like really really really from the hood doe”. Then I left Detroit and went to college. Nowadays I probably train more than I should. I usually train at least 5 hours a day 5 days a week. I get a lot of sessions in with head coach Eric Turner, strength coach Nate Hoffmeister, Joey Zonar, Rafaello Oliveira and John Faust of Lafollette Boxing. Occasionally I get to train with Pigeon Forge and Bearden high school wrestling teams. Also 7X!!! World BJJ champion Samuel Braga and his star teenage student Jesse Calbaugh. I get a lot of love from ALL of these people and more.

Feb 10 you fight Len Cook at XFC 16 in Knoxville. Where does this fight rank in importance in your career? Is Cook your toughest challenge to date?

Len Cook is good in every aspect. I think highly of his skill set. He’s very, very good. Is he the toughest challenge I’ve fought? I dunno. You gotta remember that as an amatuer I was being flown to Pennsylvania; and NJ to fight some of their toughest guys. I’ve already fought some really tough dudes – Purple Belt NAGA champ, American Top Team wrestlers, pro boxers and state champion wrestlers. I think Len is well rounded, but he hasn’t fought anyone like me… he’s the one that should be talking about how tough I am.

Are there any aspects in which you feel you are superior to Cook?

As a white belt I torched the blue belt division in NAGA, subbing almost everyone – gi and no-gi. I train boxing at Kronk’s in Detroit. I train everyday with UFC and Strikeforce fighters & get the same coaching that they got to get them to that level. Are there aspects in which I feel superior? Yes, all of them.

What about his game concerns you the most?

Nothing about his game concerns me. Are there areas where he is more dangerous? Sure, he’s got some weird kicks and he’s got a good ground game, but I wear the armor of God, therefore, I am unstoppable.

There has been some talk about the 130 catchweight on this bout. What has been the deal with that?

You should ask Len what the deal is with that. Either him or his coach lack the testicular fortitude to fight me at a ‘real weight class’. I guess they’re used to cherry picking opponents for their guys and figured I couldn’t make the weight. In essence they were trying to say “no, we can’t do that fight because Chris make 130…” then I called their bluff and I imagine they crapped in their pants.

In the interview that Cook gave to Cyrus right before the B-Mac fight, he said 7 or 8 times that he’s a 135 lber now and he wouldn’t go lower – even to avenge a loss. Then he gets a fight offer to fight me and the first thing out of his coaches mouth is: “ït’s gotta be at 130.” It’s not professional. It’s bush-league crap.

What can we expect from your televised bout with Len Cook Feb 10 on HDNet? Care to give a prediction?

You can expect fireworks, that’s for sure. I won’t give a prediction but a lot of other people are giving their predictions via your Facebook discussion post Len Cook vs Saint-Christopher Wright. Mostly everybody pick me to win. Even his friends, family and fans didn’t pick him to win. They just say he has the skills to win or we’ll see February 10th. Wow. My dad, Chris Sr., says that Len will get KO’d if he tries to stand with me. But I won’t make a prediction. It’s XFC ‘High Stakes’ and I’ll let the chips fall where they may!

Get to know XFC’s Len Cook

For those out there that aren’t familiar with Len Cook, let’s start by telling us about yourself. What is your background? What is your training like?

I grew up in the country side of Abingdon, VA. I’ve been involved in martial arts since I was very young. I started in kindergarten. Now I train at Absolute Jiu-Jitsu in Bristol, TN. I’ve been training there for a little over 3 years. Every day I am at the gym at 7:00 in the morning, go to work, then I’m back in the evening. I’m constantly working all sides of my game, training kickboxing, wrestling and jiu-jitsu.

Feb 10 you fight Chris Wright at XFC 16 in Knoxville. Where does this fight rank in importance in your career? Is Wright your toughest challenge to date?

This fight is the first time I have fought on live TV, so yes I consider this the most important fight of my career. It’s a chance to put myself and my gym out there, and show everyone what we can do.

Are there any aspects in which you feel you are superior to Wright?

From what I’ve heard about Chris, he sounds like a well rounded fighter. I constantly try to evolve all aspects of my game so I am able to handle the fight anywhere. I think I’ll be fine anywhere we go. One thing I know I’ll have on him is I refuse to quit. I’ll never stop coming, because this is how I survive now. He is not going to take that from me.

What about his game concerns you the most?

I have had the chance to step in the cage with several game opponents, each tough in a different way. I’ve learned that every fight offers different obstacles, so to answer your question, Wright is just another fight. As I said before, I train so I will be ready for everything. I’m ready for anything that comes my way.

There has been some talk about the 130 catchweight on this bout. What has been the deal with that? Wright has expressed his opinion in interviews. What’s your side of the story?

All I know about the weight is, from what I heard, they said they could do the fight at 125. My coach accepted and then they changed there mind. Now its set for 130. I try not to concern myself with the match making and fight set up. When coach says, “I’ve got you another fight”, I don’t ask for all the details. I just need to know where and when to show up.

What can we expect from your televised bout with Chris Wright Feb 10 on HDNet? Care to give a prediction?

I always go into a fight with the intention to finish. I don’t like to leave it in the hands of the judges, so expect a war.

Anyone you would like to thank?

I want to thank my team mates for their help and support. Without them I wouldn’t have thought about stepping in that cage. I also want to thank Dustin Dyer for keeping my eyes blacked and me being pissed off about it!

What does your training consist of?
A lot of weightlifting, cardio, and explosive training. My main discipline is grappling.

When and why did you start training?

I started MMA in the beginning of May because I love competition.  What better way to compete than to test my abilities and heart against another warrior?

What ranks(BJJ, etc) or titles do you hold?

I’m a white belt in Sanshin-Ryu Jiu-jitsu.

What are your thoughts on your opponent at 3FC VIII?

It’ll be a good fight. We’re both gonna put a good show.

What can we expect to see from your fight January 13?

A good hard fight.  I’m gonna go out there and give it my all. My opponent better be ready for a fight,  because I’m bringing one to him on Jan 13th.

Anyone you would like to thank or give a shout out to?

Meet 3FC Star: Billy White

Name: Billy Lee White
Team: Elite Martial Arts
Trainer: John Long
Hometown: LaFollette, TN
Age: 21
Record: 1-1
What does your training consist of?

My training consists of the usual: Cardio, weightlifting, etc. I’m a big fan of explosiveness training. I’d rather be explosive than anything. My main disciplines are: Boxing, Kickboxing, and Jiu-Jitsu/Submission Wrestling

When and why did you start training?

I started training Shotokan Karate when I was 16, the person I have always looked up to in life was my older brother Freddie. I grew up around martial arts because he was in it. He still is and  he’s one of my training partners now. I wanted to be just like big brother,  so the first chance I got I went to the school he got his black belt under, and now I’m addicted to it.  I don’t know where my life would be without martial arts.

What ranks(BJJ, etc) or titles do you hold?

I am a brown belt in Shotokan Karate, and a yellow belt in Sanshin-Ryu Jiu-jitsu.

What are your thoughts on your opponent at 3FC VIII?

He looks like a tough opponent.  He comes out hard and fast with no fear. It’ll be a good fight for both of us, and I’ll test his abilities in all aspects of MMA.

What can we expect to see from your fight January 13?

Fireworks. Fight of the Night. Win, lose, or draw, Kaleb Sanchez will know he was in a fight on Jan. 13th.

Anyone you would like to thank or give a shout out to?

All my training partners for pushing me to my limits and not letting me give up. My friends for supporting me. And my mom, she comes to every fight, and I’m sure it’s heck on her nerves watching me fight but she supports me anyways.

Meet 3FC Star: Derick Lambert

Name: Derick “Day Walker” Lambert
Team: Team Advantage/Mountaineer MMA
Hometown: Princeton, WV
Age: 24
Record: 5-3
What does your training consist of?

I’ve been fortunate enough to find the right guys to train with, adding BJJ, Muay Thai, and wrestling.  I focus a lot on these 3 aspects.

When and why did you start training?

I started training in MMA about 2 years ago, but I’ve boxed since I was 10 or 11 yrs old. My amateur boxing record is 17-3.

What ranks(BJJ, etc) or titles do you hold?

I am a black belt in Hapkido.

What are your thoughts on your opponent at 3FC VIII?

Gib Frye is a tough guy,  and like myself, I’m sure he has become a much better fighter than he was in our first bloodbath for the Total Control Welterweight title.  Expect a war and the best man will win,  but with our new fight ending capabilities, don’t expect to see this fight go to the score cards! This rematch will be settled within the 3!

What can we expect to see from your fight January 13?

You can expect me to leave it all in the cage.  My standup is better than ever. My BJJ coach is a black belt and since I’ve had losses by submission, that has helped me a lot.  I work my ground game everyday, so I’m willing to fight from anywhere the fight goes.
Anyone you would like to thank or give a shout out to?

I would like to thank my BJJ and Muay Thai coach, Sampy, for putting in all the extra hours with me and my teammates and for working hard to get me ready.  Also, thanks to you guys at 3FC for the shot,  I won’t disappoint!!!
